Description of Source manuscripts of Amarakośas

The Newari Lexicon is drawn entirely from the 11 manuscripts described below. A paragraph describing the manuscript is followed by a bibliography of that manuscripts descriptions and citations in catalogues and other secondary sources.

A1 (Amarakośa 1), NS 501 / AD 1381

Sanskrit-Newari language, Newari (Bhujimmol) script, palmleaf, complete, size 34 x 5 cm., folios 78, lines per folio 6-7; with Newari Commentary called "Putrapautrādibodhanaṁ"; scribed by Jasaraj Vaidya of Cāvihar in Sātiglasthān in the reign of King Arjunadeva, dated NS 501 Bhādra śukla 12 Sunday. (Petech 1984:132, September 1st., 1381, (Sātiglasthān mistaken in Petech as “Māniglasthān”)). Deposited in National Archives (NA), Kathmandu, Accession No. 4-590; NGMPP reel no. A2 (Amarakośa 2), NS 506 /AD 1386

Sanskrit-Newari Language, Newari script, palmleaf, incomplete, size 78.74 x 5.08 cm., total folios 159, last folio 161, missing folios 5 and 88, lines per folios 5; Newari commentary called "Bālabodhanīvivṛti", authored and scribed by Manikya, written for the son of Amātya (minister) of King Jayasthiti Malla, dated NS 506 Caitra Kṛṣṇa 13 Wednesday (Petech 1984: 139, March 28th, 1386). A2a (Amarakośa 2a), c. 520/c.AD 1400

Sanskrit-Newari language , Newari (Bhujimmol) script palmleaf, incomplete, size 29.8 x 5.2 cm., total folios 10, last available folio 12, missing folios 6-7, lines per folio 5-6; One extra leaf contains hymn to Avalokiteśvara and Sanskrit commentary on a verse of the beginning of the Amarakośa. A copy of A2 tradition, undated; the language is of c.NS 520/c. AD 1400 according to a comparative study of A2 tradition Amarakośas. Deposited in Nepalbhasa Parishad (obtained from Baikuntha Prasad Lakaul), Kathmandu; NGMPP reel no. E 6/5, filmed in March 22, 1976 and also in E 1443/11, filmed in February 22, 1983; Original on loan and also photo purchased from National Archives. [Now the manuscript is in the Asha Archives, Kathmandu.]

 

A2b (Amarakośa 2b), c. NS 720/c. AD 1600

Originally collected by late Prem Bahadur Kansakar, later donated to Asha Archives, Kathmandu; Sanskrit-Newari language, Newari script, Thyāsaphū paper, incomplete, size 23 x 8 cm., folios 122, lines per folio 11. A copy of A2 tradition, undated: language and script of c.720 / c. AD 1600 according to a comparative study of A2 tradition Amarakośas. Original on loan to Dictionary Committee.

 

A3 (Amarakośa 3), NS 550/ AD 1430

Sanskrit-Newari Language, Newari script, palmleaf, incomplete, size 32 x 4.5 cm., total folios 102, last folio 108, missing folios 65-66, 81, 86, 104-105, lines per folio 5-6; Newari commentary called "Putrapautrādibodhanaṁ", authored by unknown writer Kalehradeva, dated NS 550 Phalguna Kṛṣṇa 14 corresponding AD 1430 March. Deposited in National Archives, Kathmandu, Acc. No. 5-890 (originally possessed by Bharati Bhavan of Hemaraj Sharma); NGMPP reel no. B14/25, filmed in August 28, 1970; This is a copy of A1 tradition. Photo donated by Prof. Bernhard Kolver in May 16, 1983 for Nepal Research Program.

A3a (Amarakośa 3a), NS 637/AD 1517

Sanskit-Newari language, Newari script, paper, incomplete, size 24.5 x 7 cm., folios 101, lines per folio 6-7, Newari commentary called "Putrapautrādibodhanaṁ", dated NS 637 śrāvana śukla 4 corresponding AD 1517, June-July. There are "Saṁvatsara ślokas" (year-verses) in post-colophon described of the death of King Ratna Malla of Kathmandu in NS 640 / AD 1520 and donation made in Samyak by śubhat Bhāro in NS 615/AD 1495. Deposited in National Archives, Kathmandu, Acc No. 5-3490 (originally possessed by Bharati Bhavan of Hemaraj Sharma); NGMPP reel no. B265/21, filmed in April 18, 1972; This is a copy of A1 tradition. This was discovered lately by Dr. Janaklal Vaidya in 1984 and Nepal Bhasa Dictionary Committee (NBDC) decided to include it in Amarakośa recompilation in October 12, 1987. Sanskrit-Newari language, Newari (Bhujimmol) script, palmleaf, incomplete, size 29 x 5 cm., total folios 50, available folios 4-5, 7, 9-12, 14-15, 17-18, 20-21, 23, 28-32, 35-37, 39, 41-42, 48, 50-51, 53-54, 58, 61-63, 67-71, 73-75, 77, 79, 82, 84-88, lines per folio 5, undated- one extra leaf attached mentioning an event of the reign of Yaksa Malla of NS 591 Kārtika śukla 13 corresponding AD 1670.Collected originally by Prem Bahadur Kansakar, Kathmandu, Original on loan [Now the manuscript is lost].

 

A5 (Amarakośa 5), NS 662/AD 1542

Sanskrit-Newari language, Newari script, Paper, complete, size 28.2 x 9.7 cm., folios 125, lines per folio 9, dated NS 662 (bāhu tarka kumāra) se iṣu (Vaisakha ?) śukla (arjuna) 9 (durgā) Sunday (arkavāra) corresponding AD 1542. Deposited in National Archives, Kathmandu, Acc. No. 1-805, NGMPP reel no. B 267/9, filmed in April 19, 1972; This is a copy of A2 tradition. Photo donated by Prof. Bernhard Kolver in May 16, 1983 for Nepal Research Program.

A6 (Amarakośa 6), NS 718/AD 1598

Sanskrit-Newari language, Newari script paper, incomplete, size 24 x 9.2 cm., total folios 146, last folio 147, missing folio 9, lines per folio 5, glossed not in running text but on the top and lower margins and on the top of the related Sanskrit synonyms in the middle, the book commissioned by Ravutta Devasimha of Cakalankhubahar, written in NS 718 Bhādra śukla Thursday, corresponding to AD 1598, when King śivasiṁhadeva of Kāntipur reigned in Lalitpur. Collected originally privately by late Loka Ratna Tuladhar, Kathmandu. Original on loan.

First introduced in the ariticle "Amarakośa", by Thakurlal Manandhar (1975) in Newari monthly Jhī, 158 (NS 1095 Yaṁlā), pp. 1-2; 159 (NS 1096 Kachalā), pp. 1-2; Colophon (p. 7) and its facsimile (p .36) is published in Mahes Raj Pant, 2006: "Saṁsāradevīko Pratimāsthāpanā garī rākhieko tāmrapatra", Pūrṇimā 122 (VS 2063 Aswin).

 

A7 (Amarakośa 7), NS 803/AD 1683

Sanskrit-Newari language, Newari script, paper, incomplete, size 26.6 x 8.9 cm, total folios 170, last folio 185, missing folios 32, 109, 111-124, lines per folio 7, undated-date written in attached separate text, a short Vedantic hymn Hastāmalaka (including dasagardubham, samskārārtha) NS 803 Jyeṣṭha Kṛṣṇa 5 Monday by the same scribe Nārāyanasiṁha Karmācārya, whose handwriting is similar to this Amarakośa. Deposited in Nepalbhasa Parishad (obtained from Siddhicharan Shrestha), Kathmandu; NGMPP reel no. E 4/3-5/1, filmed in March 19, 1976; Later microfilmed in three numbers separately to Multiple texts as E 1438/1 Amarakośa, n.d.; E 1438/1 Hastāmalaka, NS 803; Amarakośa (separate folios 145-154), n.d in February 17, 1983; Original on loan. A8 (Amarakośa 8), NS 831/AD 1711

Sanskrit-Newari language, Newari script, Thyāsaphū paper, complete, size in 19.5 x 7.9, folios 26, lines per folio 5, glossed in verse up to Manuṣyavarga, first Kāṇd*a, by Harivaṁśa (śarmā), scribed by Deveśvara of Vaṁrā and given to Rudrarāma. Text called Aṁbalasimha saphuri/Aṁbalasimhapustaka, dated NS 831 Aśād*a Kṛṣṇa 8 Wednesday, corresponding to AD 1711 June-July.
